The latest NZ Business Credit Demand Index Q3 2023 was released today, measuring the volume of credit applications for trade credit, business loans and asset finance. Key findings: 🏙 Business credit demand stabilised, down -1.2% year on year in the September quarter of 2023 📢 The September quarter saw solid demand growth in the Accommodation and Food Services sector +16.0%, offset by some softness in the Construction sector -3.5%. 📊 There was mixed demand across the business credit products, asset finance up +7.2% and business loans steady +0.3%, with trade credit falling sharply -8.0%. Overall demand remaining 10-12% below pre-pandemic levels. This week we released the latest insights into NZ consumer credit demand with our Consumer Credit Demand Index for Q3 2023, which measures applications for retail credit products such as credit cards, personal loans, and mortgages. Key findings: 👆 Consumer demand for credit rose by +1.5% year-on-year in the September quarter of 2023. 💰 Personal loan demand was the key driver behind the rise with demand up +16.7% in Q3 year-on-year. Personal loan demand was up across the regions, with the exception of Southland which was relatively flat. 💳 Credit card demand fell for the first time in four quarters, relatively flat at -1.2% year-on-year for Q3 2023. 🏠 Mortgage demand fell for the ninth consecutive quarter, down by -2.7% for the same period last year, however the decline has stabilised with easing inflation and interest rates on hold since May 2023. Get the latest Business Credit Demand Index for Q2 2023, which measures credit enquiry volumes for commercial products including asset finance, business loans, and trade credit. Summary points: - Business credit demand grew +6.3% year on year in the second quarter of 2023, the biggest increase in two years. - Asset finance (+13.2%) and business loans (+7.2%) were the largest contributors to the Q2 2023 increase, with trade credit relatively soft (+1.1%) year on year. - The rise in demand was led by Transport (+29.7%), Accommodation and Food Services (+16.2%), Manufacturing (+15.4%), Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+10.9%), Construction (+9.1%) and Retail Trade (+8.3%), experiencing an increase in applications across all forms of commercial credit. - A notable decline was Rental, Hiring and Real Estate Services (-3.4%). Key findings: Following seven consecutive quarters of decline, consumer credit demand increased by +5.3% in the June quarter of 2023. Unsecured credit demand increased markedly, up +15.1% year-on-year for the June quarter, driven by ongoing growth in credit card demand (up +16.0% vs the same period in 2022), along with strong personal loan demand (up +14.5% vs the same period in 2022). Mortgage demand was down slightly, -1.7% in the June 2023 quarter versus the same quarter 2022 and is broadly in line with pre-pandemic levels, a positive sign as we head into the remainder of the year.
